Sumy Oblast is located in the north-eastern part of Ukraine, on the territory of the region the state boundary between Ukraine and the Russian Federation lies. The subsoil of Sumy Oblast has explored deposits of natural gas, oil, chalk, clay and loam. More than 15% of the territory of Sumy Oblast is covered by forests, there are numerous national parks located in the region. Sumy Oblast economy has dominating large enterprises of machine-building industry, oil, gas and chemical industries, the important sectors of the regional economy are light and food industries. There are numerous historical and architectural monuments located on the territory of Sumy Oblast, most of the architectural monuments dated by XVII-XIX centuries, the City of Konotop has one of the famous hyperboloid Shukhov tower (1929) on its territory.
